Sir/ Maam
good day sir/maam, i've created this forum to ask some information regarding Ships Deballasting operation and its importance to loading of cargo (bulker) it's our thesis topic, we decided to put it here because these social networking site is created for those sailing the seven seas and only seafarer would know and can answer or give knowledge or details to that specific topic, sir please help us to gain or to collect some information regarding our topic.
thank you and godbless us all seafarers out there!!

sir alex protasov yes sir ballasting/ deballasting calculations and what would be the effect of mis calculations of ballast. my teammates said that in some port of australia you cannot deballast your ship prior to entering that port because of the height of cargo gear on the pier so what they do is while loading their ship a panamax ship, they synchronize their deballasting operations together with the loading of cargo. and if they pump out their ballast there maybe a large shortage of cargo and the ship may be banned on that port.. please sir any information you will give will help us a lot on defending our thesis!thanks for replying on my post!!

dear cadet ur question is not understandable. thr is nothing will happen to the amount of cargo if u pump out ur ballast while in port.but still u have to comply with Ballast Water management if tht port required. during ur initial loading u have to declare so much amount of ballast tht is onboard the vessel.so it will not effect the quantity of cargo. the loading rate must be agreed with shore terminal. its a compulsory requirement in IMSBC code. Master have right to stop loading operation if he think the loading rate will endager the safety of crew, ship or environment.

Dear Cadet,First of all you have to understand that when the ship is going alongside has already received all the information relating to the loading operation such as Loading Rate,Depth alongside,Air Draft Restriction,Maximum Sailing Draft.Lets take an example now...We have a Cape Size bulker loading in Australia(lets say at FMG Terminal). The maximum air draft for that port is 21m. Almost all cape size(160000-180000mt DWT) vessels are laying on that terminal with air draft 19.5m-21.0m without ballast in the ballast hold(No6).When the loading commences the rate varies from 8000-13000 MT/Hrs.The deballasting rate is usually 2500-3000 M3/Hrs per one pump. So,if you have to load 10000 MT in the first pour you must pump out(actually gravitate out from the respective TST tank) the following ballast quantity:
Cargo Quantity to be loaded / Cargo Loading Rate per Hour * Total Deballasting rate.
10000MT/Hrs / 130000MT/Hrs * 6000 M3/Hrs
With the above formula the Chief Mate calculates all the steps until the total completion of stripping. It is obvious that if you'll deballast more quantity the vessel will be gain more freeboard with result to make damage to the Loader...It is simple, isn't it?The most important during deballasting is to get enough trim for a couple of hours (more than 4-5m) in order to pump out as much as possible with your ballast pump before you'll proceed for the stripping. If you won't succeed to pump out all the water you'll receive less cargo.I hope that you understand all the above...
