hi,

i think the name you are looking for is "bulwark". acording to a book i had left since my time at the academy the bulwark protects the forecastle from rough sea.

Could it be that you are thinking of a "bulbous bow" , which looks like the head of a whale just at the waterline? (Instead of a sharp angle)
